Julia Self's profile

Pleased To Meet You

A self portrait is often used to depict the artist that produced it on a deeper level than what is seen on the outside. In this digital self portrait I chose 3 words I would use to describe myself as inspiration for the images that make up the design. I then tinted the images with cyan, magenta, and yellow which allows the images to be overlayed, creating interesting color dynamic.

The finished work is 12 x 18 inch self portrait, with the purpose to visually convey who I am not just by what is seen but also by what it is on the inside.

Tools used: digital photography, overprinting, and digital printing.
Bottom half of the opened fold out.

When the paper is folded, these two bottom panels appear as the front and back. On the left is my name including my contact information. On the right are the three words I chose to describe myself which connect to the images seen in the background. I chose the words loving, anxious, and thoughtful because I thought it was important to embrace the reality of the attributes that make me "me."
Top half of the opened fold out.

When the paper is folded these top two panels are the inside facing pages. I experimented with metaphorical photography in order to convey each word through each image. The magenta image which represents the word anxious is the focal point to my design which then creates a visual hierarchy with the other images used.

The images consist of three colors: cyan, magenta, and yellow. Using CMY the images were able to be overprinted allowing to view all the images at once while interacting with one another cohesively. The magenta image represents anxious, the cyan represents loving, and yellow represents thoughtful.

The grayscale image and blurb featured on the back side represent me in a metaphorical way. The "it is what it is" quote is important to me because it has always been something I tell myself when I start to get anxious about things, it is so important to me that I decided to get it tattooed. The grayscale image coincides with me because I collect records.
